Human Rights Award/Aid to NGOs

http://jkmpic.blogspot.com
The Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Center for Justice & Human Rights is accepting nominations for the 2011 RFK Human Rights Award. Established in 1984 in the spirit of Robert Kennedy’s ideals, the award seeks to honor those courageous and innovative individuals striving for social justice throughout the world.

Persons and, in exceptional cases, organizations working non-violently to promote and protect human rights of any race, creed, religion, nationality, gender or sexual orientation are eligible for the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.

Those working for social change within their country of origin and who have worked strategically and effectively to address serious human rights problems are given the highest priority. Often these human rights defenders and movements are working against tremendous odds and at great personal risk.

A one-time total cash prize of U.S. $30,000 will be given to the nominee selected to receive the Award. While it is preferable that one nominee is given the Award, if more than one recipient is selected in a year, the cash prize will be divided equally among the recipients.

The deadline for nominations is February 15, 2011. For more information :

Human Rights Fellowship

Details: http://jkmpic.blogspot.com
The 2010-2011 Carr Center for Human Rights Policy Fellowship Program at the Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government has two opportunities available under its Gebran G. Tueni Human Rights Fellowship.

The Gebran G. Tueni Human Rights Fellowship is a stipendiary fellowship. In addition to the stipend, fellows are provided with office space, computers with LAN and Internet connections, and access to Harvard University libraries and other facilities. Unfortunately, the Center cannot assist in efforts to secure outside funding; therefore we strongly encourage applicants who will require additional funding to apply for those funds simultaneously with the Tueni Fellowship application process.

Candidates will be selected from a pool of English speaking scholars, journalists, writers, human rights activists or social scientists, from any ethnic or religious denominations, who have shown a demonstrated commitment to human rights and social cohesion in the Middle-East. Preference will be given to candidates who are human rights practitioners from Lebanon and Iraq. In the event that eligible candidates from Lebanon and Iraq cannot be identified, fellowships may be awarded to candidates from other Middle Eastern countries.

Tueni Fellows will undertake a major research project focusing on the areas of freedom of speech, arbitrary detention or discrimination against minorities, displaced populations or other vulnerable groups in one or more countries in the Middle East region.  As with all Carr Center Fellows, Tueni Fellows are expected to contribute to the Center’s programs, and participate in broader dialogue with students, faculty and researchers in the Harvard community. In particular, Fellows will be expected to lead at least two public seminars and be involved in the student community in some capacity, for example, by leading a study group or advising students.

The last date to submit applications is 1 March 2011. For more information, visit :

Foundation Ensemble’s Small Grants Fund

http://chenabindustries.blogspot.com
Foundation Ensemble’s Small Grants Fund provides funding in the areas of animal biodiversity, water and sanitation and sustainable development. However, nearly 50% of this fund is focused upon supporting projects related to biodiversity such as protecting species of animals that are under threat and/or about to become extinct.

Unlike Program Fund, the Small Grants Fund of the Foundation represents the 15% of its annual endowment and it has no geographical priorities (proposals can be submitted from around the world).

Small and medium-sized NGOs are especially encouraged to apply to this Fund, but they need to ensure that they do not fall in the category of what the Foundation does not fund. Please read carefully the previously funded projects under this Fund at the Foundation’s website before applying.

The maximum amount of money that will be invested per project by the Foundation is 30,000 €. The Foundation can  provide up to 50% of the total budget.

There are two separate application forms under this Fund. Projects relating to animal biodiversity have to use a different form and for other projects, the Small Grants form has to be used.

The deadline to submit proposals under the Small Grants Fund is 11 March 2011.

TB REACH’s Wave 2 funding call for proposals

The TB REACH’s second wave of funding has this call for proposals to fund projects that promote early and increased case detection of tuberculosis (TB) cases and ensure their timely treatment, while maintaining high cure rates within National TB Programmes.

TB REACH encourages the development and application of innovative, ground-breaking and efficient approaches, interventions, and activities that result in increased TB case detection, reduced transmission and prevention of the emergence of drug-resistant forms of TB. Purchase of Nature Grants Program for NGOs : The IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands (IUCN NL), a platform of 25 IUCN members in the Netherlands has a unique small grants program which provides funding local NGOs to purchase and protect threatened wildlife habitats and vulnerable ecosystems around the world.

In areas under high pressure the purchase of remnants of natural vegetation and creating private protected areas can have a massive impact on the conservation of local biodiversity. With exploding land prices, triggered by developments in the ‘biofuel’ market or development projects, there is no time to wait for decisive action from politicians or decision makers. (In the Paraguayan Chaco for example, hundreds of hectares of dry forest are destroyed every day). If used by capable NGOs, land purchase can be an extremely valuable and fast-working instrument to protect threatened ecosystems and safeguard them for future generations. The SPN programme provides the financial support for such dedicated NGOs to implement these much needed interventions.

The SPN programme works only with carefully selected local conservation NGOs, with a proven capacity in management of natural resources. These NGOs will eventually own and manage the purchased areas. The SPN programme DOES NOT own any lands, it only provides the funds for the purchase. Buying land and placing the management, and/or ownership, in the hands of an NGO can be a delicate and sometimes complicated matter.

The funds are eligible for local conservation NGOs working in Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Although the geographical range of SPN is very broad, the bulk of the projects funded are located in Latin America. Legislation in most countries of this continent makes it relatively easy (compared to many countries in Africa and tropical Asia) for NGOs to purchase and manage land, and arrange for the title deeds to be registered in their name.
